Classroom Organization

To provide a variety of learning opportunities and encourage hands-on, active participation, Sunbrook Academy classrooms are organized within well defined areas of interest to encourage exploration and discovery through learning centers, such as “science,” “math and manipulatives”, "art", and “dramatic play.” All of the equipment and materials your child will encounter are age-appropriate and designed to encourage freedom of discovery and self-expression. Fundamental learning in reading, writing and mathematics is advanced with even our youngest students through activities like circle time, sorting and seriation activities, and building with blocks. Role playing in the “dramatic play” center, outdoor activities and group activities are used to enhance appropriate social behavior and character development.

Playground Safety

As a fun-filled extension of the classroom setting with organized activities, Sunbrook playgrounds offer students the opportunity to participate in group games, art projects, science experiments and other activities. What’s more, outside play promotes gross motor skill development and provides the opportunity for social interaction. Playgrounds are individually maintained based on age and each play area is specifically designed to include safe, age-appropriate equipment. Sunbrook Academy’s playground equipment is constructed of the highest caliber materials and meets ADA and ASTM requirements.

Nutrition and Meals

With a full-time chef certified in Nutrition and Food Safety, Sunbrook Academy provides a nutritional “super snack” breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack every day. Fresh fruits and vegetables are used as often as possible, a peanut-free menu option is available and only rbST-free milk is served. Annually reviewed by a Registered Dietitian, all of our meals meet or exceed the USDA guidelines for a well balanced diet and each week’s menu is clearly posted to allow parents to reinforce the value of proper eating habits and good nutrition.

In addition to the significant amount of time we have given to health research and the quality of our menus, we have also chosen foods that are delicious and child-friendly. We encourage children to enjoy mealtime as a positive social experience and meals are served “family style” to allow interaction while learning manners and valuable skills of independence. Setting the table, serving themselves and clearing the table after the meal is not only fun, but it also helps children learn proper dining habits. During meals, teachers are present and discussions often center on the use of proper table manners, the nutritional value of various foods and the day’s events as well as any other appropriate subject of interest to the children.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Dance and gymnastics classes, a music program, foreign language instruction and computer-based learning are part of the Sunbrook Academy experience. Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and School-Age children also enjoy field trips to learn about their community and the world in which they live.

Proper Rest

Time for napping is included during the instructional day to restore your child’s energy reserves. We provide fresh bedding along with comfortable, individually-assigned mats and soothing music to allow them to rest in comfort.

Transportation Assistance

Transportation is provided to-and-from local public schools for School-Age children. All transportation vehicles include individual seat belts for each child and are meticulously maintained for both cleanliness and safety through regular inspection and routine maintenance. All Sunbrook Academy drivers have undergone a rigorous check of their driving record and have been certified in Pediatric CPR and First Aid.

Staff Selection

Teachers are carefully screened and selected through reference and criminal background checks. Each staff member completes a rigorous orientation process, which exceeds normal licensing requirements and covers topics ranging from the center’s philosophy on childcare to policies, procedures and curriculum implementation. In addition, all teachers are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours per year in ongoing training along with certification in Pediatric CPR and First Aid.

Safety

Your child's safety is prominent in our minds. Every Sunbrook Academy School is equipped with an electronically monitored fire alarm system, fire sprinklers, controlled access system, exterior floodlights, emergency exit lights and intercoms in all rooms. Emergency preparedness plans are in place for fires, tornadoes, utility outages and terrorism. Fire and emergency evacuation drills are conducted monthly.

My child has been at Sunbrook Academy for almost 2 years. The center is kept very well maintained and meals are presented in a timely and good manner. The teaching staff is wonderful! These people are very qualified in their teaching skills and all have the natural and loving attitude towards the children. - Alana Riedinger
